Welcome to Stories Beyond Japan

Japan’s story is changing, and I want to be part of it in my own small way.

Hello! I'm Miki, a writer, strategic copywriter, and cultural consultant based in Tokyo. Born and raised in Japan, I attended public schools where asking “why?” wasn’t exactly encouraged. Teachers prioritized conformity and an “organized” environment, making it feel like expressing curiosity could get you in trouble. There's a well-known saying here: “The nail that sticks out will be hammered down.” That’s exactly how I felt—expected to fit in rather than stand out with my questions.

It took me years to embrace my natural curiosity as a strength rather than something to hide, a journey I shared in my piece: What is Your Superpower?

But deep down, I knew that asking questions and connecting with others brought me so much joy. Over time, my curiosity led me to teach myself English, connect with people from different cultures, and explore over 16 countries. Eventually, I realized that my curiosity wasn’t a flaw—it was my superpower. It’s how I make sense of the world and help others do the same.

Why This Newsletter Exists

This newsletter, Stories Beyond Japan, is more than just a platform satisfying my curiosity. It’s a space to give voice to different perspectives and celebrate the power of asking questions.

What you can expect:

  • Stories within and beyond Japan: I’ll highlight inspiring individuals I’ve met in Tokyo and elsewhere, sharing the unique stories that make them who they are.

  • Insights that spark “aha” moments: These stories might challenge the way you see the world or offer a fresh perspective—whether they’re about overcoming obstacles, redefining success, or discovering new ways of thinking.

  • A community built on curiosity and growth: That's not a one-way conversation. I want to hear from you.

I’ve been writing about the quiet shifts happening in Japan:

  • The small, everyday choices that reflect optimism.

  • The curiosity that challenges norms and opens doors.

  • The way traditions and ideas evolve—sometimes slowly but meaningfully.

Now, I’m bringing these stories together—

because Japan’s story is changing, and I want to be part of it, in my own small way.

Telling its stories is my way of taking part.

I'm currently compiling a mini e-book featuring some of my favorite stories and insights. If you'd like to be among the first to read it, please subscribe.

I’ll send it your way when it’s ready.
